Money
  • When coming to Ukraine - bring "clean money". Denominations of 10s to 100s are fine, but they must be dated 1988 or newer, and with no marks and no tears. This will make money exchanging much easier for you. Traveler's checks are extremely hard to cash in Crimea, therefore they are not recommended. It is possible to use ATM machines now in Kiev, Simferopol and Yalta; some machines give you a choice of dollars and grivna. It is best to bring in cash all that you will need, and for paying your local expenses and reimbursing the Association.
Shots
  • Check with your physician to see if your immunizations are up to date. If it has been ten years since you have had a diphtheria-tetanus booster, you should have another. Also, you may want to call the Center for Disease Control's 24- hour International Traveler's Hotline: (404) 332-4559. They sometimes recommend additional shots. There are no requirements when you enter the country.
Telephone
  • To make an International call from Ukraine:
    • on hearing the dial tone, dial 8 (the index of inter-regional service)
    • on hearing the second dial tone, dial 10 (index of international service)
    • dial country code (US country code is 1)
    • dial the area code you are calling
    • dial the number of the person you wish to call
    * Note: the cost is up to $3dollars a minute.
  • For English speaking operator assistance dial: 8-192
  • Most public telephones now require phone cards locally purchased, both of local and international calls.
  • Taxis, buses
    • In Simferopol, taxis are usually about 12 grivna; an amount equal to $4 will get you to most places in Simferopol, except to the airport. $7 will get you between town and airport.
    • In Kiev, $30 is standard between train and Borispol airport; or the national airport ('Zhulyany') and Borispol.
    • For the independent traveler with light luggage, there is a shuttle bus service in Kiev that takes you from Borispol Airport to the Victory Square ("Ploshcha Peremogy"), an end stop some ten minutes' walk from the railway station.
    • There are buses to other cities that start from the Borispol airport, too. Check for fares and schedules inside the international terminal.
