It's the story of what happened one day when the river boat came to this village. It was always an exciting day when the river boat arrived. The river boat came only once a month. Sometimes not even that often. It's also the story of a very busy and happy man. And a lazy, unhappy man. The village pastor was also a lonely man. His wife had died, and he had no children. But mostly, this is the story of a little boy. And this is how the story began. Such a beautiful child. What's your name? Whose baby is that? Mmm? I- -I don't know. Someone brought this little fellow and left him at our doorstep. For us to take care of? Why not? Taking care of a baby is a lot of work! But he'll grow up. Think how much help a strong young boy can give us ... around the house and out in the garden. Before you know it, he'll be old enough to bring up water from the spring. And scrub floors? Mmmm. . .perhaps. Since we don't know your name, we'll have to give you one. Mmmm, let's see. . .I think we'll call you. . . Dombi. Isn't that a good name? Dombi? If he's a good worker, it's a good name. The whole village loved Dombi. No one had any idea where he came from, but everyone was happy he came to the Pastor's house. That is, everyone was happy but the Cook. The Pastor helped take care of Dombi as much as he could. But the Pastor was busy. So ... much of the time, the Cook had to look after the little fellow. He didn't like that at all! There was one bright side for the big Cook. He looked forward to the day when Dombi could help with the work. Jesus loves us. We can come to Him any time. Talk to Him. Ask Him to help us. There are many wonderful things to learn in the Bible. One of the most wonderful verses in the Bible is John 3:16. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Dombi! Come here and help me! But Dombi wasn't interested in helping the Cook. He only wanted to play. The growing young boy especially liked to play along the river. The Pastor had warned him to be very careful of the crocodiles, for they can be very, very dangerous. At first, Dombi only watched the crocodiles from a safe distance. But as he grew older, Dombi became more bold. Dombi especially liked when the river boat came. Those geese are ours. I ordered them from the city. We must take good care of them. That's the gander. He bit me. Y-- you need to be careful, Dombi. Sometimes a big old gander can be hard to get along with. Dombi! Dombi, be careful. You haven't pulled those weeds in the garden! Just having the river boat come to the village was an adventure in itself. It was about the only link the people of Dombi's village had ... with that big world out beyond the jungle. Today the captain of the river boat brought many things that the people needed. The people could buy things, always sure the captain would only ask a fair price for what he sold. But more than money, the captain wanted to trade with the villagers. For such things as ebony wood, or valuable jungle skins. Dombi wished he had something to trade with the captain. Then Dombi got an idea. Maybe he did have something the captain would like! The people were so anxious for the things the captain ... had brought to sell and trade, it took only a few minutes ... until everything he had brought with him on the river boat was gone. Do you have a toy to trade for this snakeskin? Let me see it. It is not a very valuable skin. Is it yours? No sir. It came off of a snake. Have you any toy to trade for it? The toys are all gone. But I will pay you for the skin. Mmmm? I'd rather have a toy. I may have something. I'll give you this for the snakeskin. That doesn't look like a toy to me. Come with me. Mmm? Come on! Please pick up those 2 stones, and I'll show you something. Give me one of the stones. You keep the other. You throw your stone first. Let's see how far you can throw your stone out across the water. Now let's see what happens to this other stone. Dombi! Pull those weeds in the garden! Dombi. Did you get that slingshot from the boat captain? I traded an old snakeskin for it. Come here. I want to talk to you about slingshots. I had a slingshot when I was a boy. My father made it for me. I should have thought to make one for you. You can have a lot of fun with a slingshot. But slingshots can also be very dangerous. You've got to be careful. Very careful, Dombi. It's best not to use a slingshot around the village. A careless shot could break one of the beautiful windows here in our chapel. It would cost a lot of money and take many months before we could replace it. You wouldn't want to hit one of our geese. If we lost that gander, for example, we could never have any little goslings. And it's a good rule never to shoot at birds. Oh, they are beautiful creatures! What about the mean old robber bird? They rob eggs from other birds' nests. They cause lots of trouble. Even the robber bird is good for some things. I want you to be careful. Only play with your slingshot out in the jungle or down by the river. Dombi! I think he's playing down along the river. Listen to what God's Word says. (I John 1:9) "If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just ... to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Don't let yourself fall into the terrible bondage of sin. Jesus came to set us free. That's why He died on the cross, and rose again from the grave. And Lord, show me how to help Dombi. He needs you. Every boy and girl in all the world needs you. Please help me show Dombi his need. Well, now, there was one bird he could shoot with his slingshot - the robber bird! Even though the pastor had said they were surely of some good, Dombi couldn't think of anything good about them at all. No, he couldn't think of one good thing about a robber bird. Only bad things. Even the cook might be happy if he killed a robber bird. But then, just as he let the stone fly - 2 terrible things happened. The robber bird flew away. And the stone from Dombi's slingshot ... sailed right toward one of the beautiful chapel windows. I'm putting your slingshot away until you can learn to be more careful. You must not touch it until I give you permission. Days passed ... weeks. Dombi tried to find other fun things to do. But he had enjoyed the slingshot so much, he more often than not just sat thinking about it. Dombi! Come here! Then, one day, something very important happened. It didn't seem so important to Dombi at first. I'm going to take the river boat down to the city to take care of some business, and I'll be gone for about - a month. I want you to be a good boy. Try to be friendly with the cook. Help him with the work. Don't cause any trouble. I'll ... try. Dombi really wanted to be a good boy. He especially tried to do things the pastor asked him to do ... because he loved him so much. Besides, working helped him not to think about the slingshot. The cook tried to get Dombi to do all the work. So, sometimes the boy would sneak away to walk in the jungle or along the river. Then, one day - about a week after the pastor had left - Dombi had his great temptation. Ouch! Dombi was so angry, he decided to teach that gander a lesson. Who did he think he was - just biting somebody that way? Some wild animal would surely come from the jungle, find the dead gander, and carry it away. Dombi thought he must surely be just about the luckiest boy in all the world. No one would ever know he had killed the gander. Dombi! Go down to the spring and get 6 buckets of water! Go down to the spring and get 6 buckets of water yourself. What if I tell the pastor what you did to that gander? Now go work in the garden. Work faster! Come scrub the floors! Aw. . . What if I tell the pastor about that gander? Dombi became a slave to the cook. I'm tired. I want to rest. If he didn't do exactly what the cook asked him to do, the cook had only to say one word. Gander. Hurry! He worked from early morning until late at night, and then, even at night, he would have very bad dreams about the cook ... and what had happened to the gander. Keep working! You wouldn't want me to tell the pastor what happened to that gander? One hot afternoon, when Dombi had carried up 10 buckets from the spring ... to water the garden, he was so tired he didn't know what to do. If he could just slip away for a while. Go down to the river. Do some of the things he used to do. But the cook seemed to be watching every minute. You can go for the water later. Come here. Now that the pastor was back, Dombi was really the cook's slave. He made him do many more things. Even making his afternoon nap more comfortable! He was so tired from all the other work, he could hardly move his arms. Yet, if he stopped for just one minute ... Gander. The pastor knew nothing of what had happened. He had been so busy since returning from the city, he had had little time to even talk to the little boy he loved so much. He thought since Dombi worked so hard, the boy and the cook had become better friends. It was terrible being a slave to the cook. But what could he do? Dombi decided to do something very, very wise. Come in. I'm glad to see you. I've been so busy, all I've noticed is what a good boy you are. And how well you are getting along with the cook. That's what I came to talk to you about. Crying so much he could hardly talk, Dombi told the pastor exactly what had happened. Great love came to the pastor's heart. I'm sorry. Dombi didn't know what his punishment would be. He just knew he couldn't be a slave to the cook any longer. Then something very, very wonderful happened. I forgive you. What? I said, I forgive you. I love you. I'm very unhappy about what you did. But you have confessed your sin, and I forgive you. Dombi felt as though a thousand pounds had rolled off his shoulders. This was just about the happiest day of his whole life. Dombi! Why did you quit fanning me when I was taking my nap? Go down to the spring and bring up 20 buckets of water. Shall I tell the pastor what happened to the gander, huh? Go ahead. It won't do any good, because I already told him. And he forgave me. Dombi was no longer a slave to the cook. And do you know why? Because he had confessed his sin. The very next Sunday, the pastor used Dombi's experience ... to illustrate his sermon. We are all slaves to Satan, he said. But the Bible tells us that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Dombi was happy to be free from the cook. For as the pastor said, everyone is a slave to Satan. That's why the Bible tells us to confess our sin, and to put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Dombi decided to really trust in Jesus that very day. He even decided to be as nice as he could to the cook. THE END --- "Dombi" Visit: www.intercommedia.org -and- www.creationism.org
