The first man and lady. And He placed them in a beautiful garden. But they disobeyed God and caused sin to come into this beautiful world. Even though they were sorry for what they had done, many bad things began to happen. Adam and Eve had a son named Abel. Abel loved God and tried to please Him. But Adam and Eve also had a son named Cain. Cain was jealous and unkind. Cain became so jealous that he killed Abel, his very own brother. You see, it is sin which causes people to do so many bad things, like killing, and stealing, and being unkind. Adam and Eve's children grew up and had children of their own. And their children grew up and had children too. Soon the world was full of people. Many were good people. But others, because of sin, did bad things. Sometimes very bad things. The Bible tells us that all have sinned. As you grow older, you will read in the Bible about people who made God very unhappy because of the things they did. You will also meet people in the world today whose hearts and lives are full of sin. Two of the worst sins, especially for boys and girls, are selfishness and stealing. Selfishness often makes people want to take things that don't belong to them. As more and more people came to live in our world, men and women became more and more sinful. But there also lived in those days one good man named Noah. Noah was't like his neighbors. He loved God with all his heart. Noah did nice things like being kind to animals. Did you know that being kind to animals is part of what it means to please God. But of course being kind to people, especially to those who need our help, is an even better way to do what God wants. Well Noah not only loved God and obeyed Him, but he was so close to God that God actually talked to him. Noah, God said, you see how bad people have become ... because of all the sin in their hearts? Now I must punish these sinful people. But I'm not going to punish you and your family. So I want you to do something for me. I want you to build a big boat made out of gopher wood. It'll be called an Ark. I want you to paint it inside and out in a special way ... so no water can come in and everyone and everything inside will be safe. God told Noah exactly how high, and wide, and long the ark should be. Where to put the windows, and the door. Lord, Noah said, I never heard of a boat like this before. It was a strange boat. Very strange. No sail to make it move. No rudder to guide it. But why did God want him to build such a big boat, Noah wondered. It's because I'm going to cover the earth with water, God explained. There will be a great and terrible flood. I'm going to protect you and your family, God told Noah. I also want you to take in 2 animals of every kind on the earth. One male and one female. You and the animals will be safe in the ark. Because he was a man who always obeyed His Heavenly Father, Noah did exactly as God told him. Mrs. Noah was very surprised. But she knew her husband was doing what God told him to do. They didn't have any family when Noah began building the ark. But even as he was building, it took many, many years. God gave Mr. & Mrs. Noah 3 sons: Shem, Ham, and Japeth. How exciting it must have been for those boys, playing around the building materials, helping their father work. Their parents taught them to also love God and to obey Him as their Heavenly Father. Other children in the neighborhood were not at all like Noah's sons. They were selfish and unkind. The older neighbors thought Noah was crazy. They laughed and laughed as they watched him work on the ark. Some of them even went right up to Noah and called him bad names. But Noah was not unkind to them. Some of the people probably worked for Noah, helping him build the ark. And it was a big joke to them. But no matter what people thought or said or did, Noah was faithful in building the ark. He was also faithful in telling the people they should turn from their sins. They should let God make their hearts clean. Otherwise, he warned them, you will die when punishment comes to the world. God is going to send a terrible flood. Everyone outside the ark, all the animals too, everything and everyone will die. Noah, you are crazy, most of them said. You will be known as the biggest fool in all history. I am only obeying God, Noah replied. You should also obey Him before it’s too late. And so, year after year, after year, for it took a long, long time to build, Noah continued working on the ark. His family helped too. The boys, when they were younger, and as they grew older, and when the boys got married, their wives helped as well. For all of them listened to Noah's warning and trusted in God the way he did. How very wise Noah and his family were. But the people continued to laugh and make fun of Noah and the ark. Whoever heard of such a thing, they would say, building a boat on dry land. Surely there has never been a bigger fool ... since the days of Adam and Eve, said others. Many said Noah would never finish the ark. But he did. It was just after his 600th birthday. Do you think maybe his family had a big party for him? Let’s just imagine it was at the birthday party when God spoke to Noah. He told him the time had come for him and his family to move into the ark. And to be sure to take two of each of the animals as well. What an exciting time that must have been for Noah and his family. All these years they had been obeying God, knowing He intended to bring punishment upon the wicked earth. But now that that punishment was about to happen, it was almost as though they were hearing God's warning for the first time. We will obey you, Lord. Ah, yes, my family and I will obey you. Yes, Lord. It made Noah very sad to think of all the people who would die. Yet he had warned them again and again for many, many years. You understand that God did not want to bring a flood upon the earth. But there was so much sin in God’s beautiful world. So many who would not obey him. He had no other choice. Closer and closer from all over the world, the animals came. Two of each of the birds, and two of each of the animals came toward the ark. Does it not seem strange and sad that birds and animals ... would obey God when people would not. The sinful people, those who had refused to listen to Noah's warning, grew fearful, as they saw the birds and animals coming. This was the way Noah had said it would be. Some of them remembered. Could Noah have been right after all? How amazing it must have been. How strange and frightening to see all those birds and animals entering the ark. Even the turtles got to the ark. A little late maybe, but not too late. Do you suppose maybe Noah took pity on them ... and came down and picked up the turtles and carried them in? It would have been just like that good man, wouldn’t it? Noah and his family were very busy getting everything arranged. Perhaps the animals helped by being obedient to Noah and his family. It must have been a beautiful time. Beautiful and busy. But it’s fun to do things God wants us to do, isn’t it? That’s exactly what Noah and his family did. Do you know how big the ark was? The next time you see a freight train, count the cars pulled behind the engine. Over 500 of those railroad box cars would have fitted into the ark. 500 freight cars! No wonder there was room for so many birds and animals. And for food to take care of them, too. The people who had made fun of Noah ... and who refused to listen to the warning God had told Noah to give them. Well, these people now began to wonder if maybe Noah wasn’t crazy. Maybe he had told them the truth after all. Maybe God really was going to send punishment to the earth. Some of them decided to see if they could get into the ark, too. Not because they wanted to obey God, but because they were afraid what might happen to them. But Noah told them it was too late. That’s why the Bible says, Remember your Creator in the days of your youth. And the Bible also tells us today, if you hear God’s voice, do not harden your hearts. And you know how we hear God’s voice, don’t you? He speaks to us through the Bible. And through your Sunday school lessons. Through what the pastor says at worship time. Well these people were probably about ready to force their way ... into the ark when something frightening happened. The Bible tells us God Himself closed the door. How frightening that must have been. But so unnecessary. If only they had listened to Noah. If only they had obeyed God, every one of them could have been saved from punishment. Even after all they had seen, there were probably those who still didn't believe. Like maybe gamblers who could have said, Huh, I'll bet there won't be any flood. And in less than 2 weeks Noah will come back out of that big boat again. But the door to the ark did not open. Then suddenly!, the Bible tells us, great fountains of water sprang up from the ground. What is this? The people cried out. What is happening!? For they had never seen such a frightening thing before. Then rain began to fall. The Bible tells us it had never rained on the earth before. But it rained now. It rained and rained for 40 days and 40 nights. What shall we do? The people cried. There truly is going to be a flood. God is going to punish us, just as Noah warned. It was too late for them to be saved. 40 days and 40 nights it rained. Rained, rained, rained! Water also kept coming up in fountains from the ground. But the ark floated quietly and safely. For Noah had done exactly what God told him to do. The ark had been built well. My, but things must have been busy inside the ark ... with those few people taking care of all those animals. But you can be sure they enjoyed their work, because they were serving God. And taking care of His beautiful birds and animals. Wasn’t that a strange and wonderful family? People and animals living safely together in the ark God had told Noah to build. I'm sure many of those animals became pets. Don't you think so? Days passed, and then weeks, and the rain continued to beat down upon the ark. But inside faithful Noah and his dear wife knew God was taking care of them. And then slowly but surely, the rain stopped falling. Winds blew the clouds away, and the sun began to shine ... and the great fountains from the earth grew quiet. As the water went down, the tops of the mountains began to appear. Then more and more of the earth could be seen. At last, after about 5 months, on the 17th day of the 7th month, as the Bible says. The ark came to rest upon a high mountain. The name of that mountain was Mt. Ararat. It is now in the land of Turkey. Yes, the ark came to rest. But it was still too early to go out. Even though you can imagine how anxious Noah and his family were to do so. By the 11th month, Noah decided to try something. He took one of the blackbirds, a raven it was called, and let it fly out the window. He also sent a dove. The blackbird found a place to rest. It did not return to the ark. But the dove was not so brave. It came back to Noah. After a few more days, Noah sent the dove out once more. Where would it go?, He wondered. Would it find a resting place as the blackbird had done? No, the dove did not find a resting place. It came back. But this time it had a leaf in its mouth. How exciting that must have been for Noah. Whenever you see a dove flying with a branch in its mouth, as it builds its nest, remember how important a dove once was to Noah. Remember, too, that the dove reminds us of peace, especially of God's peace. After a few days, Noah once more sent out the dove. What would it do? He again wondered. Would it find a safe place this time as the blackbird had done, or would it come back. Well, the dove did not come back. And Noah and his family decided to have a better look ... at what things were like outside the ark. How pleased they were to see that the time had at last come ... when it would be safe for them to leave their big boat. Oh, yes, they were very excited. The animals were excited too, you can be sure of that. How good it must have felt to Noah, knowing that he had obeyed God. And because he did, he and his family, and all those animals ... had been kept safe from punishment in the great ark. Soon baby birds were born, and little animals. How beautiful and exciting it must have been. Noah and his family were so happy they built an altar ... and got down on their knees to pray and thank God for being so good to them. It is important to thank God for all the things He does for us. It makes God very pleased when we tell Him we are thankful. And then something very beautiful happened. God caused a rainbow, the first rainbow ever seen, to appear in the sky. Do you know why God did that? It was because He promised Noah to never again ... to permit a great global flood to come upon the earth. Whenever you see a rainbow, remember all the wonderful promises God has given us since Noah's time. God’s greatest promise of all is that we can have our sins forgiven ... and then learn to love and serve Him all our lives.
