The Bible on Homosexuality:
Is it Gay, or Detestable?

by Thomas F. Heinze

Is the subject of homosexuality controversial? Yes! Very! Some people love homosexuals and help them be accepted by calling them gay, a nicer word. Others hate them! Is homosexuality good or bad? Is there an authority on the matter, or is my idea as good as yours? I suggest that we give greatest weight to the opinions on homosexuality written in the Bible. This will sound stupid to some, and ridiculous to others, but I find extremely strong reasons that we should respect the Bible and take its side in this issue.

Here’s why:
The Bible may well be the earliest book that was ever written, but even today, millions or billions of copes are still around. It is often published on better paper and put in a stronger binding than other books, but even though built to last longer, the Bible may well be the only book that gets worn out before it is discarded.
When a Bible owner dies, his Bibles are generally passed down to his heirs who often read them with increased interest because of the underlined verses and comments in the margins made by the loved one who has died.

After huge numbers of Bibles have been passed down from former generations, new Bibles are still best sellers. If you or I write a book and it sells acceptably, it’s partly because no other books exactly like it are out there. Generations upon generations have passed their Bibles down, but with so many old Bibles already in circulation, new Bibles still sell better than your book or mine.

Translations
The Bible is also outstanding because it has been translated into more languages than any other book.

The Bible is the Word of God
God seems to have invited us to put the Bible to the test. For example, it has a great number of prophesies, many about Jesus Christ. All were written before the events prophesied had happened. Prophesies of Christ’s first coming are an example. We can check up on these prophesies by comparing what He did to what they said He would do. Try to find some other book that puts itself out on a limb like that. Few books have any prophesies at all, and most of those that do are betrayed by them. What they said would happen did not happen, so they end up demonstrating the unreliability of the books that contain them. The prophesies of many other books are so vague that people can claim that they mean whatever they want them to mean.

The Old Testament, on the other hand said some very specific things.

Examples: Christ would be born of a virgin; would be among the descendents of David; his hands, feet, and side would be pierced. Old Testament prophesies were fulfilled as prophesied!

The fact that you can trust the Bible is one reason it is called God’s word. Now let’s look at the most important opinion in the world on the homosexuality: What God says about it in the Bible.

God's Word Says Homosexual Offenders Will Not Inherit the Kingdom of God:
“Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1Corinthians 6:9-10 NIV)

No matter how badly one wants to make the Bible mean something different than what it says, he is foiled by this passage. Homosexuality is one of the really bad sins, and homosexuals are bad sinners. Only through faith in Christ can they be forgiven. By including homosexuals in a list of wicked sinners: thieves, swindlers, etc. it exposes the sinfulness of this sin.

Homosexual sex is “detestable”

Leviticus 18:22

“Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.”(NIV)

I can see no way to make this passage favorable, or even neutral to homosexuality, “detestable” means “detestable!” “Detestable,” is almost impossible to twist around and serve backwards.

How about the Bible’s next passage on the subject?

Judges 19:22-23

22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him."

23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, "No, my friends, don't be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don't do this disgraceful thing. 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don't do such a disgraceful thing."

The man in the passage above considered homosexuality to be far worse than rape. Here is the next Bible passage on the subject; also unfavorable!

1 Kings 22:45-46

“As for the other events in Jehoshaphat’s reign, …He rid the land of the rest of the male shrine prostitutes who remained there even after the reign of his father Asa.”

Decide which you will believe: God’s word, or the opinion of a few modern sinners who want to either rebel against God, or excuse themselves, or both!

Many homosexuals, to avoid obeying God's word, teach evolution; the idea that mankind evolved from a primitive cell rather than having been created by God. Those who understand evolution, however, should realize that natural selection would have selected against homosexuals because they produce fewer offspring than heterosexuals.
