Study a catastrophic sedimentation in Baksan canyon
.
All in Russia know that on July 18, 2000 in Baksan canyon on Caucasus the catastrophic mudflow occurred, which has brought the large destruction to a settlement Tirnauz. Those who were in Elbrus region (highest point of the Europe) well know this place. Many people perished in the catastrophe. We are condoled by all injured in this awful accident and we shall try to do what we can to help in the work of liquidation of consequences of this natural disaster.
Nevertheless, as a result of this mudflow the geologists received a unique chance for study of catastrophic sedimentation. Thousand cubic meters of clastic deposits were eroded and re-deposited. In similar conditions during the eruption of a volcano St. Helens in May, 1980 (USA, state Washington) and in a valley of the river the Bijou Creek was revealed, that during a several hours the fast flowing current has done work, on which in usual conditions tens years would need. As long as the hydrodynamical activity had decreased, the laminated sediments were formed. It is usually considered that such layers are formed as a result of sedimentation during many years. The detailed study of similar cases allows the scientists better to understand a history of Earth and research the features of that global accident, which is known to us as the World Flood.
